Belfast Central Mission (NI) (2004 – present)

Solution: Hardware, Software, Training & Communications

Summary:

Belfast Central Mission is an agency of the Methodist Church founded in 1889 in response to problems inherent in inner-city life with the primary objective of meeting the needs of the whole person, spiritual, emotional, social and physical regardless of class, creed or colour. From their central headquarters in Belfast they are recognised as a well structured, professional organisation operating over 12 facilities and employ 130 staff that continues to meet the needs of local communities and individuals throughout Northern Ireland.

MCC were introduced in 2004 to BCM on a referral to look after and upgrade the entire network and server. Since then we have forged an excellent relationship and we now support BCM in all areas relating to IT. As well as servicing their networks we now look after their website as well as specialist training. No matter what their technical query is we are delighted to provide an organisation of this size with peace of mind. MCC have become responsible for:

  • Networks
  • Server
  • Training
  • Broadband
  • Emails and Internet
  • Securities
  • Backups
  • Website
  • Computers, Laptops, Printers & Handhelds
  • Software Applications

Hardware

The problem – In 2004 MCC took on the responsibility of BCM's complete network and server systems. The network occupies 3 floors of a building with more than 25 users. The challenge to MCC primarily was upgrading the complete network and server to a new platform while at the same time ensuring that the different departments were not affected and the transition was seamless.

The solution – Initially MCC set about putting all the appropriate securities and backups in place and centralising their systems. In a carefully planned program of upgrade many processes were carried out side by side such as replacing older computers and standardising software. A new server was put in place and gradually while the old and new systems were running simultaneously MCC transferred over the accountancy department with all its online systems, mail servers plus new user accounts as well as all the correct data from the different departments. Since then MCC after now taken on responsibility to serve multiple locations as well as the day to day queries regarding anything to do with the IT hardware.

The results – BCM now have a stable upgraded network which is continually maintained to a high standard so that it remains reliable. Due to the friendship between us, MCC act as much in an advisory capacity now and ensure that BCM don't have any unpleasant surprises.

Training

The problem – BCM required training specific to job criteria and tasks. The training had to be unobtrusive to the day to day running of the organisation and create greater efficiency.

The solution – MCC designed the training programs which would best suit BCM. These training programs were carried out in a "Hands on manner" so that the users would not only learn new skills but it would also be of direct relevance to their job requirements. Training covered areas such as MS Access, form creation and the Content Management System of their own website.

The results – Users can perform their task much more efficiently and effectively which contributes to time saving and helps improve staff morale.

Software

– Database

The problem – One of the departments had a database which needed some areas rewritten.

The solution – MCC rewrote some of the system and under the supervision of an MCC software developer the team at BCM took responsibility for what they could do. The database was completed to specification and in a manner that allowed BCM to extend it.

The results – The database was able to record information much more quickly and accurately and combined with reporting was a great time saver.

– Website

The problem – BCM needed a professional website which would keep users uptodate with the latest goings on, so the website needed to be content managed in certain areas. it was also important that contributors could donate online.

The solution – MCc worked with BCM on the objectives for their website and translated these into www.belfastcentralmission.org. The website employees a bespoke content management system incorporating a file uploading system and a file/image archive.

The results – BCM can now reach a wider audience which can be kept posted of their activities as well as present a means for users to make donations.

Communications

The problem – BCM needed secure wireless networks integrated with their existing network.

The solution – In 2004 wireless networks were setup in the conference centres to accommodate visitors with internet access when giving presentations.

The results – Making use of the one internet account made for a good saving in the long term and the wireless environments created greater flexibility.
